Example of Play

Orion Rogue: I look down the hallway. What do I see?

BM: The corridor extends some 15 meters further, then turns right. There are two doors, one on either side of the hallway between where you are standing and where the hallway turns.

Orion Rogue: Can I see what is labeled on either door?

BM: Roll a sighting check at 55% plus modifiers.

Orion Rogue: I have no sighting modifiers, so I guess I only have a 55% chance off success. I roll a 27. Cool!

BM: The door on the right says janitorial closet. The left one reads Laboratories: Secure Area! There is a keypad just above the doorknob on the left hand side of the door.

Eridani: OK. Ram, you stand guard at the corner. Chatilian, you guard the rear. The Orion will try to pick the lock and I will stand guard.

Chatilian: Why do I have to guard the rear? I always get stuck guarding someone's rear. Furthermore, my superior intellect is better suited to determining what we are up against, once we gain access to the laboratories.

Eridani: Just do as you're told.

Chatilian: No sweat, Lord Marshal of the universe! We inferior life forms jump at the chance to follow your whims. We're not worthy.

Eridani: Asparagus, those who can not follow rules and regulations prove that they are inferior. You will do as you are told or I will be forced to terminate you.

Orion Rogue: I pull out my flask of Scotch and take a drink to piss off the Swordsaint, staring at him while I take a nip. Afterwards, I pull out my electronic lock picks. I have 6 levels of defeat security. The lock picks give me an additional +35 bonus.

BM: Make a level 12 defeat security check.

Eridani: I snatch the bottle of liquor from the Orion and dispose of it.

BM: Roll a d10 to determine initiative. Subtract initiative modifiers for agility.

Orion: Well I'm screwed. I have -1 initiative bonus because my agility is 85. I roll a 4 and subtract 1, which gives me a 3 on initiative.

Eridani: I have 112 agility which gives me a -3 to initiative. I roll a 4. Subtract 3 and I have 1. I go first.

BM: Make a manual dexterity check at a -25 penalty.

Eridani: I have a manual dexterity of 93. So 93 -25 = 68%. I roll a 19.

BM: The Swordsaint snatches the bottle away from you and pours it on the floor. What are you doing?

Orion Rogue: Listen here, you mohawk wearing, sword wielding, born again, pencil neck Nazi geek! I don't care who you think you are. You touch any of my stuff again and I'll kill ya. You spill my drink out again and I'll kill ya. I point my Savage-B laser at the Eridani's head.

Eridani: If it were not for the importance of this mission, I would slay you where you stand, vermin! I ignore the pathetic threat and stand back until he opens the door.

Orion Rogue: Like I said, I have 6 levels of defeat security and the lock picks give me an additional +35 bonus. 50% base chance, plus 60% for my levels of skill, and 35% more because of the equipment. A level 12 difficulty reduces my chance for success by 120%. So (50 + 60 + 35) - 120 = 25. I have a 25% chance to open the door. Damn, I rolled a 52.

BM: The door doesn't open. What are you doing?

Chatilian: Do I see what's going on?

BM: Yeah. There is no one moving down the corridor that you just came from. You look behind and happen to notice that the Orion failed to open the door.

Chatilian: Well, if you guys will listen to a superior intellect, I might offer a solution. I suggest that we cut through the door with my wrist torch.

Eridani: That will take forever. Ram Python, come here. What are you doing?

Ram Python: I chewing on candy.

BM: The Ram Python is eating the doorknob to the janitor's closet!

Eridani: What! Why are you eating the doorknob?

Ram Python: I hungry. Need food.

Chatilian: That's it. I use a Stun matrix to knock out the Ram.

BM: Ram, roll a mental SMR.

Ram Python: Come on! I hate playing with you, Mike. You always screw with my characters. My SMR vs mental attacks is a 08. I rolled a 86 and fail. Dude, you're full of Dujack!

BM: The Ram collapses forward, falling into and through the secured door. This makes a huge racket, which echoes down the hallway. All of a sudden, an alarm klaxon starts ringing. What are you doing?

Eridani: What do I see inside the room?

BM: Its appears to be a high tech weapons laboratory. There are a multitude of various types of test equipment scattered throughout the room.

Eridani: Do I spot anything that looks like a prototype of a new Impact laser? I've got a +10 to my sighting checks because I'm an Eridani. Plus, I have 2 levels of sighting skill which gives me a +18 total modifier.

BM: Roll a sighting check at 15%. Since you have a +18 to sighting checks, that gives you a total chance of 33% to spot the gun.

Eridani: 02. Got it! Where is it?

BM: Something that resembles a weapon is lying at the lab table directly in front of you.

Eridani: I run in and grab it!

BM: Make an Intuition check at a -20.

Orion Rogue: I don't mean to interrupt, but when the Swordsaint isn't looking, I take my second flask of scotch out of my backpack and take another swig.

BM: No problem.

Eridani: My Intuition is only 40. That gives me a 20% chance. 01. Got it again! My dice are hot tonight!

BM: You realize that there is something missing. Not all of the gun is there. It is only partially assembled.

Ram Python: When am I going to wake up?

BM: You don't know, do ya?

Ram Python: Well how long have I been asleep?

BM: Less than a minute. Oh, by the way, Eridani. Do you have any weapon repair skill?

Eridani: Yeah.

BM: Make a level -1 check in your favor.

Eridani: Well, I've got 4 levels of skill. I've got a 50% base chance plus 10% per level of skill, plus 10% more because of the -1 skill check. My I.Q. is 50, so I don't get any skill bonuses. 50 + 40 + 10 = 100. Roll under a 100. Easy. Rolling. Got a 45.

BM: You realize that the firing mechanism is missing. It is a small microchip.

Eridani: I begin searching for it.

BM: OK. Orion, a couple seconds later, you hear a single set of footsteps coming in your direction from down the corridor to your right. Its sounds like the person will reach your position in a few seconds.

Orion: I pull out a plasma grenade and prepare to throw it.

Chatilian: Do I see or hear anything coming from my direction?

BM: No. It takes you one half action to pull the grenade.

Chatilian: I generate Clairvoyance. What do I see?

BM: You see one Human guard in AKMB armor with no helmet. He is carrying an M-20 Blaster pulse cannon and has a serious case of the ass! By the way, it takes 1 second to generate the matrix, so subtract 1 point from your power point total. He will reach you in three seconds. What are you doing?

Chatilian: I jump around the corner and open up with my Savage-B laser pistol on full auto.

BM: Make a snap shot at range bracket two.

Chatilian: The snap shot gives me a -40 to hit. I have 5 levels of skill with the laser. That's a +20 modifier in my favor. I have a 75 agility which adds an additional +01. The base chance for the weapon to hit at this range bracket 2 is 73. So 73 + 20 + 1 - 40 = 54. I roll a 35. I hit!

BM: Roll a d3 to see how many shots hit.

Chatilian: I roll a d6 and divide by two. I got a 4, so that means I hit with two shots. I'm rolling damage. Eight points and four points!

BM: Four points is subtracted from the damage because of the armor's threshold. He isn't wearing any ablative liner. So the first shot penetrates and the second bounces because it didn't do more damage than the threshold. Now I'll roll for location. 65. Four points penetrate the chest section of the guard's armor. He only has 10 body points so that's a critical hit. Multiple organs struck and reduced to jelly!

Chatilian: Is he dead?

BM: What? Are you stupid? Of course he's dead!

Chatilian: Cool!

Orion Rogue: Hey, Larry. Am I ever going to play this dumb game?

BM: Hold on. I had to finish his combat! Roll to hit with the grenade.

Orion Rogue: I step around the corner. What do I see?

BM: A lab technician running your way. He isn't wearing any armor.

Orion Rogue: I throw a plasma grenade at him. I have level 4 skill in throwing and my 76 strength gives me an additional +06 to hit. What range bracket is he at?

Eridani: Why are you throwing a plasma grenade at a guy who isn't wearing armor? It's a waste of firepower.

Orion Rogue: Because I'm an Orion and I like explosions! Plus, my favorite color is red, and I'm into creative art! I want to see what kind of mosaic this guy makes when I splatter him all over the walls!

BM: He's at range bracket 3. That gives you a base chance to hit of 50%, plus 06% because of your strength bonus, and another 16% because of skill. Remember, grenades are weapons skills and only give you a +04 per level of skill. Your total to hit is 50 + 6 + 16 = 62.

Orion Rogue: I roll an 82.

BM: You miss by 20. We divide 20 by 5 to find out how far the grenade landed from him. It landed 4m away. Plasma grenades do 8 fragments out to 2m. Subtract one per additional meter beyond two and we get six. The technician is hit with six frags which do 4-16 apiece. He suffers 3-18 points of concussion damage. Roll to hit.

Ram Python: I continue drooling all over the floor.

Orion Rogue: I do 14 points of concussion damage, which is spread equally across all seven sections of the body. Right?

BM: Yep. Now roll for each fragment and I'll roll location.

Orion Rogue: Do I have to?

BM: Not really. There isn't going to be enough left of him to scoop into a jar!
