Were you told as a child that you were special, unlike your friends around you? Did your parents tell you that you could never reveal to others the nature of that special power, lest they kill you? Did they teach you, like my parents taught me, to light a fire solely with your mind? Could you master the art of lifting an object merely with your thoughts and then bring that object toward you? If these things happened to you, then you and I are alike. We are witches! I remember playing with my friends, chasing each other around the commune, playing football and having fun like kids do. In the aftermath of the Third World War, even girls play football! I had little concern in my life, except how to get the attention of Jamie Insmuth, and how to escape my mother's eye and thus the commune, to wander around liberated in the wilderness. I did not fear Black Guard, nor monsters. I was a kid, alive and free, basically unkillable. Yet I knew that I was somehow different. I could do things other kids couldn't. I remember when I first saw the lines, red lines in the sky that seemed to appear out of nowhere and stretch off toward the distant mountains. I dreamed of those lines, night after night, until my dreams were torn by my fear. Fear of understanding, knowing that I was different, yet guarding the dark secret from my parents, and from others around me. Some of you are drawn to water, others to the forest. Me, I was drawn to the mountains. Eventually, the need to know got the best of me and I traveled up into the hills, and found my way to the mountains. And there I felt it, raw power, and uncontrolled! Did it scare you to death like it scared me? I actually ran away, fled in terror, crying my eyes out. What was I, some sort of freak? What was wrong with me? Nothing. I was a witch. So I finally told my parents what was happening. I told them that each night I found it more difficult to sleep, that my dreams always led me to the mountains where I would fight great battles with monsters and demons. In these battles, I would unleash tremendous power and thereby slay my foes. When I finally revealed my secret, my parents simply informed me that they already suspected but were not sure. My brother does not have the power. A few males do, but most don't.
